Types of Therapy

Clinic-Based Therapy

Clinic-based therapy provides a structured, sensory-rich environment designed to support a wide range of developmental needs. Purpose-built equipment and carefully planned activities allow therapists to target specific skills while keeping sessions engaging and motivating.

Clinic sessions are particularly beneficial for:

  • Sensory integration therapy

  • Fine and gross motor development

  • Building foundational regulation and attention skills

  • Children who benefit from a predictable, controlled environment

The clinic also allows for close observation and precise grading of activities, helping therapy progress efficiently and safely.

Community-Based Therapy (Home, School, or Childcare)

Community-based therapy takes place in your child’s natural environments, such as home, school, preschool, or daycare. This format focuses on supporting real-life participation and functional skills where they are most needed.

Community sessions are helpful for:

  • Generalising skills into everyday routines

  • Supporting classroom participation and learning

  • Addressing behaviour, attention, or regulation in real contexts

  • Collaborating with teachers, educators, and caregivers

For some children, learning skills in familiar environments can improve carryover and confidence.

Therapy Frequency: Weekly vs Intensive Therapy

Weekly Therapy

Weekly therapy is the most common and sustainable model for many families. It allows children to gradually build skills over time, practise between sessions, and integrate strategies into daily routines.

Weekly sessions are well suited to:

  • Ongoing skill development

  • Children who benefit from routine and consistency

  • Families balancing therapy with school and extracurricular commitments

Intensive Therapy

Intensive therapy involves multiple sessions across a short period of time, often delivered on consecutive days, this can be particularly helpful during school holidays. Intensives can be particularly powerful when starting therapy or working toward specific goals.

Benefits of intensive therapy include:

  • Faster rapport building between therapist and child

  • Increased repetition and consistency

  • Strong momentum toward initial goals

  • Reduced time between sessions, supporting learning and regulation

  • A solid foundation before transitioning to weekly or fortnightly therapy

Intensives are flexible and are most commonly completed during school holidays. They are typically delivered across one week, with families choosing between 3–5 sessions depending on their goals, availability, and funding.
